Abstract:   (75 Views)
Introduction: Cognitive-behavioral therapy, as a non-pharmacological approach, can help the elderly manage chronic pain more effectively, improve their quality of life, and enhance their focus and balance. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy on chronic pain and concentration in hospitalized elderly individuals in nursing homes in Mashhad.
Methods: In terms of purpose, the research is applied; in terms of method and nature, it is quasi-experimental (semi-experimental), and in terms of time, the research is cross-sectional (third quarter of 2024). The statistical population included elderly people hospitalized in nursing homes in Mashhad. Using cluster sampling, 20 people were selected as the sample size in the treatment group and 20 people in the control group. SPSS version 24 software and multivariate analysis of covariance were used to analyze the data.
Findings: The results of the analysis showed that the average chronic pain score in the control group did not differ much between the pre-test (1.38) and post-test (1.39), while in the experimental group, the pre-test score (0.64) and post-test score (1.05) were different. Also, the difference between the average pre- and post-test concentration in the control group was slight, while the difference in the experimental group was significant (pre-test 3.61 and post-test 4.43). Considering that the significance level (p-value) is less than 0.05, there is a significant difference between the adjusted mean scores of chronic pain and concentration in the two groups. This suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy may be effective on chronic pain and concentration in elderly patients hospitalized in Mashhad nursing homes.
Conclusion: According to the results, the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention is suggested to reduce chronic pain and improve the level of concentration in elderly people hospitalized in nursing homes. It is also recommended to do light exercise, correct sleep patterns, and play brain games.
