Introduction: Cancer is one of the five main causes of mortality. Spiritual well-being and gerotranscendence can play an important role in promoting the health of old age by creating meaning and concept in life. The relationship between spiritual well-being and the gerotranscendence with death anxiety in older adults has not been determined. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between death anxiety and spiritual well-being and gerotranscendence in older people with cancer.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 380 elderly people aged 60 and older referring to hospitals in Saveh city. Data were collected using questionnaires including demographic questionnaire, Polotzine and Ellison Spiritual Well-being Scale, Templer Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), and the Gerotranscendence scale (GS-S). Data analysis was performed with SPSS software version 26 and through independent t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results: According to the findings of the present study, the average age of the participants in the study was 70.17 years, of which 39.5% were women and 60.5% were elderly men. The average spiritual well-being, death anxiety, and gerotranscendence were 3.75, 8.7, and 4.22, respectively. Based on the Pearson correlation coefficient, there was no significant correlation between death anxiety and spiritual well-being (r=0.01, p=0.79) and gerotranscendence (r=0.03, p=0.49) in the elderly participants in the study.
Conclusion: The findings of the present study showed that there was no correlation between death anxiety, spiritual well-being, and gerotranscendence in older people with cancer.
