Introduction: The presence of behavioral disorders such as loneliness anxiety in elderly people with Parkinson's disease requires a comprehensive and accurate assessment to identify the mental problems of the elderly. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness therapy on loneliness anxiety in elderly people with Parkinson's disease.
Method: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group was employed. The statistical population comprised all elderly Parkinson’s patients visiting psychiatric and psychological centers in Yazd in 2023. A sample of 45 participants (30 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group) was selected via sampling methods. Data were collected using the Russell Loneliness Scale (1980). The interventions (ACT and Mindfulness) were administered in eight 90-minute sessions, twice a week, to the experimental group, while the control group received no intervention. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Repeated Measures ANOVA via SPSS version 24. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The results indicated that both therapeutic approaches (ACT and Mindfulness) were effective in reducing loneliness anxiety among elderly Parkinson’s patients. However, a comparative analysis of their impact revealed that ACT had an effect size of 45% in reducing anxiety, whereas Mindfulness-Based Therapy showed an effect size of 35%. Consequently, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy demonstrated significantly higher effectiveness than Mindfulness-Based Therapy in reducing loneliness anxiety in elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Based on the research findings, both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapy can be utilized as effective interventions to mitigate loneliness anxiety in elderly individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
